Dr. Melissa Kirkwood is Professor and Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery, Medical Director of the Clinical Heart and Vascular Center, and Director of the Vascular Lab at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She also holds the G. Patrick Clagett, M.D. Professorship in Vascular Surgery.
Dr. Kirkwood graduated from Yale University School of Medicine and completed General Surgery training at the University of Chicago and Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She completed an Advanced Leadership Development Program for physicians in academic medicine at the Harvard School of Public Health. Her research centers on patient/operator radiation exposure during complex endovascular procedures. She has published extensively on this topic and is an international expert in the field. Her patented prototype radiation face shield has won the UT Southwestern Commercialization Milestone Award and the UT Pitch competition for medical devices.
Dr. Kirkwood was the recipient of the 2015 SVS Women's leadership Award and used the grant to shadow the United States Secretary of Health and the CEO of CMS and was present at the White House the day MACRA was announced.
Dr. Kirkwood served as Chair of the Leadership Committee for the SVS and was integral in the development and delivery of the inaugural Leadership Development Course. She has served as the Counselor at Large for the SAVS and currently is a member of the SVS Program Committee. Dr. Kirkwood has been named by D Magazine as “Best Doctors in Dallas” every year since 2016.
