Gilbert R. Upchurch Jr., MD, is the Edward M. Copeland, III and Ann & Ira Horowitz Chair of the University of Florida, Department of Surgery. He joined UF in 2017 with an international reputation in the study and treatment of aortic disease. Dr. Upchurch trained at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston University and the Cleveland Clinic after earning his MD at UNC Chapel Hill. Prior to joining UF, Dr. Upchurch was division chief of vascular and endovascular surgery and medical director of the Heart and Vascular Center at the University of Virginia and was the William H. Muller Jr. professor of surgery. He spent 11 years at the University of Michigan going from Assistant Professor to the Doan Professor of Surgery and Director of the Aortic Center.
Dr. Upchurch is a clinician scientist with 4 NIH R01’s studying aortic aneurysms and dissections. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple journals, including the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, JAMA Surgery, and the Journal of Vascular Surgery and has served as editor or associate editor on 13 books.
A fellow of the American College of Surgeons & the Society of Vascular Surgery, he is a member of more than 12 medical associations. He is past president of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery and current president of the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery. He is currently Chair of the Vascular Surgery Board and on the American Board of Surgery. He is a 2021 National Academy of Medicine inductee.
